Math assignments 🧮
for Yandex.Schoolbook
Yandex.Schoolbook is an online platform with interactive Mathematics and Russian language assignments for primary school pupils.
Together with design director George Yakovlev I worked on interactive tasks for consecutive counting and simple mathematic equations for 8-9-years-old children. You can find some workflows and assignments below.
How to solve a digital train?
In Yandex.School, we worked together with math teachers and a neuropsychologist to learn the best practices from the primary schools.
We were trying to understand how teachers explain the task to pupils in the classrooms without digital equipment; how pupils suppose to solve the given task.
Thought-out the design process, I tried to use space illustrations in the exercise.
Step 1: What is opposite for +5? A pupil should reflect about the plus and minus relationship.
Step 2: Choose the right sign between plus and minus.
Step 3: Put the digit in the subtrahend field.
Step 4: Put the digit in the difference field. When a pupil filled the whole digital sequence and pushed the button “Go forward”, the system would show the next assignment or highlight the mistakes and ask to solve the particular parts of equation again.
How to explain the geometric meaning of multiplication?
It is important for a pupil to have a smooth transition from addition to multiplication, since it helps to understand how the multiplication works. In addition, teachers try to present the multiplication table not only as numbers, but geometrical figures. Thus, a child can develop an abstract thinking towards math and its application in the daily life.
We developed a set of assignments, which help a pupil to build a connection between squares (as physical objects) and numbers. This is a transition between addition and multiplication. Here you can see some elements and the navigation for this type of assignments.
